Why are gutters so important? There are several reasons. First, the primary purpose of a gutter system is to get the water away from the house’s foundation. Undermining a home’s foundation causes cracks both externally and inside the home. Interior doors begin to stick, cracks form around door frames and exterior home veneer will crack. This occurrence is often chalked up as settling of a new home’s foundation. With proper drainage this does not need to occur by using a properly installed gutter system to divert water away from one’s foundation. Jacking up one’s home with foundation jacks can typically cost from $10,000 to $25,000.
Many people that we have talked to don’t understand the need for a gutter system on their home. Some have actually taken existing gutters off so that they wouldn’t have to deal with cleaning their gutters. We understand that most of the state of North Carolina does not require gutter systems on residential homes and all of South Carolina does not. From Maine to Florida, excluding the two exceptions of North & South Carolina, gutters systems are required.
Also, the wood that would normally hold the gutters will become soft and then rot. Fascia board wrapped with vinyl coated aluminum will also rot due to the capillary action of water. This becomes an ever increasing expense. We have seen many cases where wood damage has occurred in the rafter tails and roof decking as well as window framing and exterior siding.
Next trenching will occur around the base of the home and water and dampness will occur in your crawl space and/or basement. This dampness and moisture is the basis for mildew growth which could contribute to allergies and cause illness.
With or without a gutter system, water can adhere to your fascia wood, roll into your soffit and cause water stains in the interior of your exterior walls producing mold and mildew. Cleaning your gutters every two to four weeks would eliminate problems of clogging and overflow, but will you do that? The best solution is to place a high efficiency, total gutter protection system on your home.
