Filtering synthetic mesh or fine mesh to micro mesh metal over plastic, sheet metal or extruded aluminum support frame
These products have two components, the mesh material, and the frame that supports the mesh. Both components can be found in either metal or plastic. The quality of screen material varies considerably (technical understanding of metallurgy or plastic polymers is not customary for the average homeowner, but the comparison is between a plastics, 304 stainless steel and 316L surgical grade stainless). The same is true for the support frame. Metal will be more durable than plastic, but again, the particular alloys used make a big difference over the long term. The comparison here is between plastic, aluminum sheet metal and extruded and anodized aluminum.
No prices are given, per foot prices must be quoted based on difficulty of home installation. (Number of stories, miter corner cuts and other factors given). Be sure to qualify a quote to include shipping and or installation by a certified installer.

What works, What works well and What doesn’t work:
We found Leaf Filter and Master Shield to be flimsy by comparison to Gutterglove. Gutterglove uses a “stainless steel surgical grade fine mesh screen” We tried poking the screen on all three products with a ball point pen. (Simulating a tree branch falling on the roof). The screen in Leaf filter tore easily. The screen in Mastershield also yielded easily.
The screen in Gutterglove was so tough, we barely made a dimple. According to Gutterglove’s sales materials we reviewed, their exclusive micro screen is used by the Navy for underwater applications and is the toughest money can buy. The actual housing of the product was noticeably different. The Gutterglove housing was heavy duty aluminum and a 5 foot panel was very sturdy just to hold in my hand. The housing for Leaf Filter and Mastershield was much lighter. It was clear to us that the Gutterglove was manufactured to be superior. We also noted that only one of the three, Gutterglove, bragged about being “anodized”. That means that it will not ozodize, corrode or rust regardless of the metal it is attached to. We think that is ritically important because some gutters are aluminum, some steel, some copper or other metals.

Thank you for such a great review, after reading it last year I had the gutterglove product installed on my home and I could not be happier with the performance, and I think it was a key selling point for my home. I have become a sustaining donor at your support us page
keep up the good work

I would be interested in a review of Alcoa’s Leaf Relief and similar products such as US Aluminum’s ShurFlo. We’ve had the best luck with this style – no ice problems, no rain overflow, and by far the most practical pricing (most systems are not practical, as it’s cheaper to hire a cleaner every year for the next 50 years!) Great reviews, and great info. Thanks.

Have read about gutterglove and it seems to be an exceptional product. As cost is a factor, can a home owner install this product themselves? Seems to be double the price to have a pro install it and one contractor even told me the gutters would have to be taken down and rehung.

my name is ross m. i’ll come right and say what’s on my mind, i’ve been in the gutter and roofing industry now for over 25 years, I have over 20,000 customers in my data base, i can prove it too, but anyways i’ve had over 30 gutter cover companys approuch me over the years to push there product and I refused because there always was some flaw with them. than one of my long time clients told me to go online and look at gutterglove, the rest is history, I worked for 30 days straight days to lock down an exclusive contract for gutterglove in washington state the epic center for gutter covers in the world, I won out over some of the biggest guys in the indusrty to brand and grow gutterglove in the great pacific northwest, if it works here which it does, it will work on your house or for your company anywhere on the planet, gutterglove is hands down the greatest gutter cover ever invented and the last you will ever need, major props to robert lenny the mastermind behind this great product and inventor. please research gutterglove anywhere online and you will find nothing but the highest grades found for guttercovers, ask consumer reports they ranked it the highest out of hundreds of covers, contact your local dealer today and you won’t be dissapointed, I have the knowledge.

I bought a Leaf Filter installation last year for the rear of my house only since ther are no trees in front. The minimum cost for a system is $1500. I got a rear installation only for much less but it was not the stainless steel as advertised in the advertisement. I had to negotiate down with a lesser product. So far so good. It cost me about $1060. Spendy!
vt, So far so good I might add.

@Dennis,
Vola ! Your comment has been published , perhaps you can say something more informative on the next one… and the biggest proof will be that you may actually consider writing something along the lines of the product you manufacture or sell is just not as good as the one we tested – so making two line jabs does not really help you out!
Moreover exposing the truth about the gutter protection industry is much more interesting than “disguising an advertisement”, besides why would you think that the consumer report about Gutter Products was identical to the one we published (three years before them)

Gutter cleaning twice a year,Aprox 150.00.Gutter covers from some of these companies over 5000.00. 5000.00 divided 150.00 equals 33.3 years to pay for a system that fails. You do the math.

We have found out that 5k is a bit high for gutter protection system installation for most homes, however your math formula seems to be a bit basic , you do not take into an account that #1 there are well over 180,000 accidents each year from ladder falls, some deadly and some of them crippling – now having someone clean your gutters for $150 three times a year sounds like a deal, however when you take into account of the time spent finding a handyman to clean the gutters and time spent waiting while he cleans them (your time I would assume is important and costs something). As well as the liability of that handyman falling off the ladder or the roof while cleaning your gutters would cost (both morally as well as financially) much more long term that the cost of a gutter protection system. Now a fall by a contractor may or may not happen and having to call someone out three times a year or climbing the ladder yourself seems like the thrifty thing to do, however utilizing gutter protection technology saves you from the hassles of cleaning gutters can be perhaps thought of using a light bulb over a candle – while the candle is much cheaper the light bulb is much more efficient and safer.

Ohh, Mustard!
Matt, as you are the so called expert in the SEO industry and you know all the SEO stuff you can probably find that we have been threatened many times by GutterGlove (from some of our previous comments) and a few other dozen companies with legal action if we did not change information and our reviews that we published about them…. that sounds like a great relationship – only the point is that Guttterglove has cost us quite a bit of our time and the time of our lawyers – and I think that the relationship of advertiser and manufacturer works a bit differently: ie we are the one essentially paying them, by wasting our time and lawyer resources, and all we get is grief from people like you – however we welcome your thoughts as we believe in anyone’s right for the freedom of speech and want to have a transparent relationship with our readers. (if we were, as you have accused us to be SEO advertisers for gutterglove, would you not agree that we would censor your comments?)
Anyhow – thankfully we have the support of our many awesome readers, volunteers and supporters with contributions of talent, time and resources – and that is why we do what we do. (fyi the results are looking very interesting for our upcoming review of gutter products)
if you care tho, Matt – we can always use some quality SEO skills on our webpage, if you have some time that you can volunteer we would be very grateful. Please call us at: 919.NCR.8484

I’m looking to replace my gutters and gutter covers. Have you heard about Gutter Rx that was rated tops by Consumer Reports? It looks like it is in-between micromesh and metal screens – smaller holes in the aluminum screen, but not mesh. I’m looking for a cost that is more reasonable than the big brand names, but still effective.
Do you know anyone who has these on their house and what the cost factor is?
Thanks, Diana

I’ve had Mastershield, GutterGlove, and LeafFilter give me quotes as well as the curved type from LeafGuard. The curved type seems to allow debris in if the water flow is slow. LeafFilter seems very flimsy and only has a plastic frame. That has narrowed me down to Mastershield and GutterGlove. The salesperson from Mastershield had a GutterGlove and their own sample. The demonstration showed GutterGlove inferior in that it allowed much of the water to flow past the filter and cascade over the front where it would not go into the gutter. The Mastershield seemed to allow ALL of the water to go through the mesh and into the gutter. Yet, your review said GutterGlove allowed more water into the gutter. What gives? Did the Mastershield salesperson wax up the GutterGlove mesh or some other trick??? Please advise. Certainly the GutterGlove has a more rigid frame, but the Mastershield seems to have an advantage with a drip edge that may keep the front of the gutter cleaner. Again, please advise as I want to get started on this project if possible before the snow starts falling.

I can answer this question I Install a few products and to be honest Mastershield is not one of them But i could make any system fail If i wanted to. Any system has to be installed correctly for it to work as intended to.Mastershield claims to be the only one that can pass a Syrup, honey, oil test so i tried this on a few products some where even from systems that i had taken off because they did not work as promised. Well most all of them worked with the three items i tested some faster than others. Gutter Glove passed great also. Gutter Glove offers 3 Screens Gutter Glove pro, Gutter glove Ultra, and leaf blaster Plus the heated system but i’ve never installed that due to i live in the south and would have no call for that type of system.
Even the middle system the Ultra works better than most systems and will compete great with anything out there and cost less the frame is not as thick as The Pro Series but that how they cut cost but saying that its still stronger that any rolled formed aluminum product i’ve ever seen.
I got off track here but if i was trying to out sell another product sure i could make it over flow.

I currently have Gutter Helmet and would not recommend it to anyone. Aside from the overshooting, if you ever need a roof replacement, you must get their installers to remove the Gutter Helmet and then re-install it after the roofing work. This is not something that is openly disclosed. As a result of not being aware of this aspect of the warranty, my warranty is void. And, to repair/replace the damaged system, they was almost 6k for 279 feet.
I am currently considering Rhino Gutter Guard (Best). In addition, how does the Rhino Gutter Guard (Best) compare with the Gutterglove product?
Thank-you.

Homeowners beware of Gutterglove in Washington state! It’s nnot always the product you need to investigate, it’s the owner’s. After reading reviews on this site and others (this one is the best I found) plus C.R. I installed Gutterglove Pro on my house along with new gutters. I had the gutter people install the covers on the second story and I installed all lower ones. I was happy with how well they were made, although I don’t remember seeing the Dome Gutter guards when I did my research. They look equally well made and are listed as handling more water. So far I am happy with this product. I have yet to do an in depth investigation regarding how well they handle heavy rains. Casual observation through the window during rains has not revealed any significant problem. I live in Indianapolis, In and I do notice the little pipe cleaner like material the oak trees drop tend to get stuck at inside corners and need to be cleaned off. Most other stuff blows off. I did have a little trouble installing kick out flashing as it is made to dip into the gutter. I had to bent the Gutterglove to made it concave so the flashing would work. The cost of the material (I bought all of it, even what the gutter people installed) was almost $10/foot. If you could purchase the Dome product for much cheaper I would certainly consider that product as the review here is very good.

Hello,
Our downstairs has flooded twice now due to gutters clogging and water cascading over the gutters on the front of the house, and seeping into the foundation. So I decided it’s time once and for all to take care of this problem. I’m over 50, and my wife doesn’t want me up on the roof cleaning gutters (frankly, I don’t like being up there either).
I am, right now, working to decide which type of gutter guard to purchase. And it seems to me, that many homeowners are in the same quandary, trying to sift through the real vs. promotional testimonials. After many hours of online research, reading various product data and viewing YouTube videos of various products and testimonials, I’ve come to the conclusion that the micromesh solution would work best for our home. We live in Oregon, lots of pine, cedar, and deciduous trees all around our house. And it looks to me like micromesh is truly the answer to my problem.
I had originally narrowed the decision down to two options: GutterGlove Pro, and MasterShield, leaning towards Gutterglove due to it’s stronger frame, and the fact that Mastershield has those ridges in the screen which I think might catch and hold small particles and build up over time. Interestingly, I did quite a bit of online research before I finally landed on this NCR page. And until I did, I had never even heard of GutterDome, which NCR seems to put at the top of the list with their testing, and by looking at the design, I would tend to agree. I like the idea of the slightly larger mesh which would be less likely to get plugged up by moss growth, and that the dome might stop more of the water from traveling over the screen and over the edge.
So I thought I’d start posting here periodically here to pass on my experiences and ultimate decision.
Last week, I sent a message through the GutterGlove website asking for a free, no obligation quote. I clicked on the “Find A Dealer” link for my area, and the result that came up was “Miller Exteriors & More”. However, when I received a telephone call from the local GutterGlove dealer, it was a different dealer, “Window World”. So either Miller Exteriors is no longer installing them, or their website just hasn’t been updated with a newer, more local dealer.
So the sales guy came to my home. It was an early morning appointment, and he was a little late. We talked for a while, I asked questions. Although he was friendly and didn’t pressure me, It was immediately apparent that he was a window salesman was only minimally familiar with the GutterGlove product. In fact, I think I knew more about the product than he did, simply from reading the GutterGlove website. But he did bring samples, and I admit the product looked as robust and as well-made as I thought it would. Although he said Window World had done lots of installations of GutterGlove, I got the feeling that “lots” was a matter of interpretation, and that it was more like a “few”.
He then went around my house, and measured off my gutters at 300′. He gave me a quote right on the spot of $5000 for the GutterGlove Pro (which works out to about $16.50 per foot, including cleaning gutters before install). He told me that they don’t play games with pricing, and he wouldn’t be calling me back to give me a lower price. They always quote their lowest price up front. Take it or leave it, he said. There was no pressure to sign anything immediately. I liked that. The funny part is, he did call me the next day to say that the company, Window World, just put an ad in the Oregonian (local newspaper) with a $250 off coupon for any of their services, windows or gutters or whatever else they do. He said he would honer that $250 off if I made the decision before the promotion deadline.
As for Mastershield, I’ve contact them through their website, and their local franchise called me back the next day (apparently, that’s all they do…no windows or anything else). I set up an appointment for next week. Then, I was really disappointed when he asked me if I was married, and would both “decision makers” be there during the quote, because they can offer a substantial discount if we sign immediately while he is there. BIG red flag for what is sure to be a high pressure sales job. I told him that I would definitely NOT be making the decision while he is there, as I was getting multiple quotes from others. So he backed off that line, and we make the appointment.
And lastly, just yesterday I sent a quote request through the GutterDome website, and now waiting to hear back.
So that’s where I am right now. I’ll keep you posted.

Update –
I spoke with the GutterDome Rep. He told me that he could either sell the materials to me and show me how to install them myself, or he could contract with a local company that could install them for me. I thought that was a little strange because on the Gutterdome FAQ web page, it says they do not sell their product as a DIY item to homeowners, and that they must be installed by their approved installers. But the Rep said they are quite easy to install and he has sold a lot of the product direct to homeowners which has saved them lots of $$.
He said if I purchased the materials and did it myself, the cost would be $5.60 per foot, plus about $20 for the screws, and plus the freight. Or, I could have them installed by a local company and it would cost $20 to $25 per foot.
Obviously I wasn’t going to have them installed at $20 to $25 per foot, but the DIY option was definitely enticing. And since I have a very capable young man that I use to help me with small repair and remodeling projects around my house from time to time, he should be able to install these fairly easily. He charges me $25 per hour, and I figure that installing 300 ft (60 pcs) should take him 2 days (16 hours). So about $1,800 for the product and $400 for installation, that totals $2,200, which is less than half what I was quoted for GutterGlove installed.
I told the Rep that I needed to think about it, and I still wanted to keep my options open and my appointment scheduled with MasterShield before making a decision.
MasterShield called the next day to confirm our appointment. He asked me again if both “decision makers” would be present during his presentation, so that he could give us a big discount if we made the decision immediately while he was there. He also started asking questions about what kind of gutters I currently have, and their age, etc. He started eluding to the fact that if they aren’t in top-notch condition, that they would likely have to replace the gutters as well in order to keep the no-clog warranty on the guards. So, yet another red flag. I felt like he was trying to prepare me that he will very likely tell me I need new gutters before he can install the Mastershield guards.
So that was the last straw for Mastershield. I was not interested in a high pressure in-house sales pitch. I cancelled the appointment and called my handyman person to show him the Gutterdome product and see if he would install them. He said yes, so I contacted the GutterDome rep and place the order.
I’ll post again after installation.

*Update*
Gutterdome gutter guards were installed yesterday. My installer (who had never installed them before) had no trouble getting them on the gutters. I have a fairly shallow roof, and he was able to install them while sitting on the roof instead of using a ladder, which he said made it go much faster (although I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a safety harness).
It is raining today, and the thing I noticed right away was that water tends to drip over the front of the gutter more than it used to. I’m assuming this is due to the rain that hits the 1/2″ solid metal front of the guard and then rolls over the front. The water that drips is no more than the actual rain itself, but it does drip fairly consistently and noticeably over the entire length of the gutter. I’m a little disappointed about the dripping, but not something I can’t live with.
My installer put up 300′ of guards (5′ strips) including making cuts for 10 corners, in less than 8 hours. Granted, he’s been in the home construction industry for his whole life, so I’m sure his time would be substantially faster than the typical homeowner.
I went ahead and paid him the $400, even though it took far less time than I had estimated. So total cost was $2200 as planned.
Now we just wait and see how they work over time!

I have been looking for GUtter protection here in WI. While I got a quote for Leaf Guard, I am leaning to the micromesh design. So I got quotes from Leaf Filter and Gutter Guard. Just like Ken’s post GutterGuard quote was marketed as their lowest quote. About $16 per foot. It makes sense given the previous posters. 10 for materials , 5 for labor. Leaf FIlter was all over the board. Had a very low quote if I signed up for installation next week (several $100 lower) . It is 10 degrees outside. Does anyone know if it makes sense to install this product in winter? My shingles are frozen to the roof and facia, and some ice in gutters. I would guess they could easily break off if are worked on at this time. Both quotes include cleaning the gutters before hand. But how good can you clean them in winter. Do they use water flushes or blowers or vacuums?
Last issue I am hung up on is if Gutter guard is such a stiff product, how does it flex for the pitch of the gutter. THe roof line is 0 degrees. Gutter pitch is what , 5 degrees? So doesnt the pressure of gutter guard lift up one end of the shingles? THanks for any comments on these issues.

I decided to go with Leaf Filter. They sold me on not disturbing the shingles and that the poly material it is made of doesnt encourage ice dams , like a fully stainless steel product would. And they offered me a nice winter discount to give them the order in FEB. Hope that works out. I will update again after the install. ANd then in the fall after I can see them work once.

Steve,
We have just concluded a Stereoscopic Microscopy Examination and Analysis of Micromesh Gutter Covers and Leaf Filter was amongst the products that we examined. We will post pictures soon – the leaf filter product was the most contaminated and corded product when viewed with a microscope.
If you like you may purchase the Micromesh Gutter Covers Report to see the details prior to publication of some of the pictures and conclusions from that research.
