Our Ratings
| Price w/ Installation | $$$ | |
|
We have discovered prices over a wide range. It appears that price is somewhat at the discretion of the commissioned sales representative. |
||
| Protection Coefficient | 3/5 | |
|
Initially this system seems to prevent most debris from entering the gutter. We have spoken to several customers who have had it on their homes more than three years and some separation has occurred. |
||
| Industry Reputation | 2/5 | |
|
Many complaints have been registered with the Better Business Bureau in the Mid-West. It is a combination of installation practices and performance. |
||
| Strength | 3/5 | |
|
One of the big drawbacks to this product is that the 0.017” thick sheet metal aluminum is rather flimsy. If you are planning to move within two years, this might work for you, but it will tend to basket or bow within a relatively short period. Work hardening of the sheet metal can also cause cracking or splitting. |
||
| Water Throughput | 3/5 | |
|
We have observed some over-shooting in heavy rains. The efficiency of the screen is somewhat limited. This is not limited to inside corners, but occurs on straight lengths, also. |
||
| Durability | 2/5 | |
|
MasterShield is relatively weak due to the thin aluminum sheet metal. It will tend to basket over time. The mesh screens are mechanically assembled and tend to loosen over time. |
||
| MasterShield Overall | 2.5/5 | |

Some quotes from judy’s book:
” Does do what it says, [your] gutters will never have to be cleaned again, Why? Nothing goes in not even water in heavy [rain] or when it snows. Screens freeze in winter causing water to flow off.”
” Had this product installed 5 years ago. During the winter,it creates an ice buildup causing ice cicles to form. This then drips onto plantings porches walks etc. causing a Very slippery,dangerous situation. Called the co. several times, they could not fix it. Would not refund my money and not longer will return my calls. STAY AWAY from this product!!! “
“I would never recommend Mastershield. They do not stand behind their product or installation and the lifetime warranty is a joke. Water flows over the gutters not into them and the ice in the winter is terrible because of this! The other poster is absolutely correct. It is dangerous.”
We currently do not have NCR verified installers/dealers for the MasterShield product.

I think the price should be more like 5/5 from my own experience this is a VERY expensive product

Why don’t you share Tim Carter from AsktheBuilder.com’s review of MasterShield? He tested it against Gutterglove and he like it’s performance better.
Given he’s a master builder, he seems to be a reasonable source for a credible review since he actually did a real world test on a gutter, over time, with tree debris. Your reviews seem to be based more on observations than controlled testing.
It seems kind of biased only to include comments that were clearly made about a weather related issue of snow and ice. You didn’t put the Judy’s book comment in from the person that says all gutter guards suffer from snow and ice conditions unless you heat the gutter/guard, which seems fair and accurate.

I”ve seen many reviews from Tim Carter I am a gutter Installer and sell a gutter Protection System Tim has no idea what works I agree many dont work and the ones that do work will not work if not Installed properly Thats whats wrong with most companies they dont take time to Install them like they should be. I’ve Installed many homes with Gutter Glove and It does work good when installed right and the gutters are also done right. In Severe rain all systems will have a little run off in spots thats a given. But when done right most of the water will flow in the gutters Nothings 100% but when they do more good than harm its working

Tim Carter from ask the builder at one time rated the Gutterglove product as his top choice, after the years he has changed it to MasterShield.
We have preformed real world tests as well and have interviewed several homeowners; We have found that although MasterShield works well Gutterglove works better, and Gutterglove seems to be a more cost effective solution.
Consumer reports have agreed with our general findings and have rated Gutterglove as the best, and I think everyone can agree that they are the most qualified for performing controlled testing.
Mr. Carters approach seems to make very general statements about gutter guards, the only product he specifically names is MasterShield, he fails to mention other products by name or for that matter he offers no information about pricing, quality, effective protection coefficient, industry reputation, strength, water throughput and durability for any product even MasterShield. The only thing he really mentions is that he recommends it and provides a link to MasterShield that he receives a commission from every time someone clicks on it.
Nancy, Your IP address seems to suggest that you are located at the MasterShields Headquarters in Ridgewood, NJ ( or a few blocks away), So are you an employee of MasterShield ?

Have this product installed on new home about 4 years ago. It has not worked well from the beginning. I have had representative out three time to check it and after they removed a section and cleaned it they ran water on roof and it worked. However it runs over at every joint, Inside corners are plugged most of time since they use a lot of caulk to seal the joints in this area and it traps material and it flows over. Ice forms in winter and drips onto sidewalk making slippery surface all around house. The last visit the tech told me they should never have sold me the product on a new roof since there is always a fair amount of silk that comes from three tab in first couple of years. To sum it up I am on ladder more now than I was before I installed these and strongly recommend you do not purchase these. So far they are unwilling to make any type of refund or adjustment.

All the complaints you have stated sounds like a bad Installation. I dont understands why you have tons of caulk on the inside corners. If you have The Pro Series You should see caulk at every joint right at the bottom of the finger joint. If you could send Pictures i’d sure try to help you out. you can e-mail TheMeanScreen@aol.com if you have Pictures. Hate to see anyone having problems with such a great Product. I’m just a local Installer I dont Install nothing else as Gutter Protection

We had this product installed one year ago this month and has worked flawlessly, have not had to even sweep material off screen, there is some that accumulates there then a few days later it disapears. One advantage I saw was in winter snow would lide down roof and being Mastershield is pitched with roof snow continued to keep sliding right off roof a curl under then fall off. Absolutly no ice damms what so ever. A few icesicles in late march when snow melted during day then froze at night, but they were very small in size maybe 5 inchs. Great product for Northern Mn and WI.

I have installed both. Both products work well. The only problem with gutter glove is its imposible to bend to follow the pitch of the roof. Mastershield is not weak, its flexible. As a installer, you must not raise the roof shingles which happens with gutter glove. Performance wise, I agree with Tim Carter. MasterShield works better.

Being that most systems like Gutter Glove and MasterShield are to be installed to the roof pitch you must not be Installing either product Correctly.You get this pitch by either lowering or raising the Gutter not bending the system. All systems will have problems just like any product If you dont install it right They will have Problems try installing a motor incorrectly and see how long it last.

An interesting fact about Gutter Glove vs MasterShield. Gutter glove was first intended to lay flat on the gutter. It was only after Mastershield created the Hydrovortex water siphoning action that a Microfilter could be installed correctly with the pitch of the roof. The water is actually channeled into the gutter. Gutter Glove decided to copy the installation method without changing the technology. By pitching gutter glove you don’t get the water into the gutter. The filter is not designed to work on the pitch.

Bingo, this testing is not scientific. No credibility, they are in bed with Gutter Glove Bigtime, don’t trust these results, They actually think that there is a such a thing as a maintenance free product,
FYI- NOTHING IS MAINTENANCE FREE IN LIFE! PERIOD!

MasterSheild also has been changed you learn as you go with just about anything.I dont have any complaints with Gutter Glove Our biggest seller right now is The ultra an most of that is because it is lower in price than the Pro Still works great I’ve tested it with Mastershield and Leaf Solution and it still works as good if not better at keeping water in. I still feel whatever System you choose needs to be Installed correctly or it will not work as good as it is intended to. I test every job I install with water to make sure everything works before I leave the job If the gutter needs a diff pitch then a good installer will do just that and i see gutter installed at every hight possible as most just dont care and throw it up.

The product seems reasonable, the installation wasn’t. To the rep’s credit, he installed them twice, but wrong both times. I ended up with an installation not meeting MS’s warranty standard, gutters so chewed up in places there’s no land left to attach anything to, and $700 in roof repairs. The corporation denies responsibility in spite of advertising skilled installers. Mine weren’t. They had no training, were not approved by the corporation, and were even unaware there is an installation manual. They couldn’t even do basic gutter work. A small deal, but they installed a downspout elbow upside down. It leaked at both ends. Another new elbow they installed had 13 screw holes in it. Thirteen! In spite of that it was attached to the exit downspout by only one screw. The corporation promises stainless steel screws for durability. None of mine are stainless. Their so-called sealed system isn’t. The installers left large holes around their ill-fitting caps. Most of the shields don’t match the roof slope. One section has the tails trimmed off and butts against the facia board instead of fitting under the shingles. There are lots of extraneous screw holes in my gutters. None were calked. The contract called for two valley controllers. They installed only one, and messed up the one they did install. The drilled holes in my metal valley, spread unsightly sealant on top of my shingles, and bent the controller causing it to crack.
Instead of offering service, the corporation refuses to talk to me, and the rep called me a thief.
