Any thoughts on what would work best for a steeply pitched slate roof? I have to have the entire front gutter replaced and I have 1 large oak that overhangs the house and 3 large Norway maples in the front yard. So no shingle debris but lots of leaves. We get about 45″ of rain a year here.

In your experience, how well does LeafX work?
Also, do gutter protections keep water from traveling along the hicks vent and getting behind siding?
-
December 11, 2011
Leafx wont work that well you have better choices out there. But as to your other Question about kepping water from behind your siding, If the gutters are not overflowing and work properly and you have some Dripedge on your roof water should’nt ever get behind your siding

Have you had a chance to test Leaf Blaster or Leaf Relief? Micro-mesh sounds like the best bet so far for my situation (in the middle of deciduous woods). The slope of my roof isn’t steep, although at one end the gutter was installed so high that the installed screen might even slant toward the roof. I also have a dent in one place where a branch probably hit the (seamless) gutter and, despite my make-shift installation of flashing to block the rain, the gutter overflows during a storm. I’ve tried to straighten it without success. Will I need to replace the whole gutter (over 50′)? My biggest concern is wet leaves accumulating on top of the micro-mesh if it rains for days on end, making the gutters fail altogether.

Constant Rain is actually what should help keep your system clean of leaves. If you have much slope at all on the screen then the rain will drive leaves off of your screen. You could have that section of gutter that is bent cut out and have another section added but it would be much easier to replace the whole peace. If you shop around you could prob have it done cheaper by replacing the bent section with a smaller “cut in” piece. I have not tested Leaf blaster but it looks to be very similar in design as the gutter glove which does work very well. It is not as sturdy as the gutter glove but I would imagine this to be a much more reasonable choice for most homeowners.

I just cleared my gutters yesterday and I have had it. A friend recommend Sure Flow gutter guards. I presume that product is not the same as Shur Flow. Any comment on Sure Flow? Thank you.

Sure flow and sure flow products both plug with debris
Look at a different approach with LeavesOut.com
I have had it on my house for 15 years with no eyed to clean.
Works great!

Hello I own a gutter protection company. I’ll help you all out here. I’ve been Installing Gutter protection for Many years I’ve seen what works and what does not. John mentioned Leaf Blaster That stuff works great I’ve been installing that for one of my Contractors i work for and its easy to install and works great Its Not The beast The pro is but as in keeping leaves, pine needles, shingle grit for the cost i’d say its your best bet If you install it yourself take your time and do it right. There is a few systems that work Gutter glove works great but if it’s not installed properly then you will have problem. there is not one Hood system availible that works all will clog simply because the reverse curve they claim has surface tention that allows water to flow into the gutter pine needles and shingle grit and other small leaves will enter. the only problem with the likes of some micro screens like leaf filter is that the filter is just to fine and shingle tar will clog the screen and then you just have a water fall and it lays pretty flat on they gutter it becomes a shelf( I’ve installed many home with leaf filter) I dont use that product anymore.I’m not on here to sell anything to just help out.

I also am familiar with a solid cover that works great and has been installed on homes across America for 28 years. If the gap is in the right position, the solid covers work fine. Yes, when it is raining some small debris will get into the gutter. As long as he gutter is properly pitched toward the downspout and the downspout is not constricted at the top the small debris particles will simply flush throug. I have seen gutters with this cover over them, and heavy tree cover around the home, be totally clear of debris after 15 years with no maintenance required. Keeping absolutely everything out of the gutter is not necessary as long as the other issues are addressed.

I am installing RainFilter (polymer foam) in my gutters and topping it with Amerimax’s 6″ x20′ roll of plastic mesh to improve the runoff of leaves and debris thereby preventing the foam from clogging and extending the life of the foam – in theory at least.
I’ve heard of people installing 3″ drain pipes or 3″ pvc pipe with holes drilled in it inside the gutters. Don’t know how effective it would be. It may have been 2.5″.

I had REAL Gutter Covers installed on my 5″ gutters. I have about 145′ of gutters between the first and second floors. I have 1 acre of yard surrounded by 4.5 acres of trees. Leaves, pine needles and sticks use to be a problem.
The debris may collect on top of the covers but, blows off within a day or two of drying out. I have not seen any long term collection of debris on the gutters.
Good luck.

Hi John Leaf Blaster works Great I Install all Gutter Glove Products. As taking in water and keeping leaves out it works better that most anything out there. If you have huge walnut trees or such you might want a stronger gutter glove brand but besides that it works

With all gutter guards these sales people like Tom Tusing DON’T TELL you you have to get up on a Ladder and clean that Micro-mesh off. With Gorilla Gutter Guard YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET ON A LADDER to Maintain the gutter Guard.

Have you checked out Gutter Baskets? They are inexpensive, easily installed, and durable. They work well on their own or can be intergrated with other systems.

Some info for those of you thinking about purchasing GutterFilter. I paid $1700 in 2007 for an official installation and it started failing in 2009. It’s shrunk in width and deformed in such a way it’s sunk into the gutter. That has resulted in lots of overflow that wasn’t a problem the first two years after installation. I thought the problem might be the level of the gutter, had a company rehang and I had the exact same issues. Took the GutterFilter out and all the overflow problems are gone. What really burns me is I contacted GutterFilter (Grand Rapids, MI) for a warranty claim and they haven’t contacted me.

I work for a company that Installed GutterFilter That lasted about 3 months Thats when all the complaints started coming in it was terrible. One job we did was the owners lawyer I was sent back to check the problem, That stuff shrunk and i tried fixing it and it would just rip apart. After calling Gutterfilter they told the owner they are over selling the product. I removed all Gutterfilter from the house and it weighed tons from all the dirt that fell in the holes it was a mess

I have been recommended to install “Shur Flo”. looks like a micro mesh. My concern is that leaf stems will get caught and not blow away. My main concern is not having a clogged system during heavy downpours as while I don’t live in a forest there are trees mostly in the back and some in front mostly at the curb about 75 feet from the house.
I have fairly shallow rooves and from your comments this system should work.
RIGHT????-
July 13, 2017
No it only works if you don’t have lots of trees, especially when they shed off the pollen, it webs, like a spider web and sticks to the openings in the guards, don’t get it!

I have been installing gutters and guards for 15 years. I personly found that there is no such thing as a mainance free system. Either they don’t keep the gutter from becoming full of debris and left paying extra money having them cleaned. Or they need some other of type of cleaning like wiping off front lip of the aluminum covers like helmets or leafproof which is not covered by warranty micro mesh isn’t a bad choice however I’ve found that in heavy rain it work great on a low pitched roof but steep roofs and homes with valleys or a metalroofs rain tends to over shoot the cover. I like the aluminum cover called leaf relief. It’s very Enexpensive and works will. Like I said in the begging, no such thing as mainence free. Leaf relief tends to hold debris on top of it but if install correctly most will blow off like the micro mesh. Just keep in mind when deciding what to install similar is better. Read reviews and get true info from people that have the product. Most salesmen have for little to zero experience installing or ever seen the product working in real weather just their little mock up table. Good luck and if anyone has any questions about gutters or covers feelfree to email me

Holes are to big you get roof grit and dirt In the gutters and then the gutters will not flow properly. sure you can get bigger down spouts. But water will not push dirt from the gutters not enough power. Pine needles stick in the holes and after awhile you have what looks like Bart Simpsons head

Hi —
I’m seriously thinking of going with the Home Depot professionally installed gutter guards. The salesman said I can get 10% off the price and can pay for them over an one year period. The best part is that they “guarantee” the guards to not clog and if they do, they will come clean them. I’m assuming they will clean them as often as needed, and promptly. The cost is more than DIY (which I can’t do since I have a Colonial style home and am nervous being on the high roof myself) and 2/3 less than the cost of a deluxe system such as LeafGuard or Gutter Helmet. Any experience with the most recent gutter guard professionally installed from Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/catalog/servlet/ContentView?pn=SV_HS_Gutters_Leaf_Protection&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053)? My concern, really, is with the design, which looks like a solid piece of aluminum, with small holes. It just doesn’t look like all the rain could fall in those tiny holes. Am I overthinking this? Thanks for any input you can provide!

Don’t do it. Any company that says “we will come back and clean it” is setting you up for failiure and WHEN will they come back to clean it? After it has failed. Go Leafilter. Good product, a little expensive but they can give you longer to pay it off.
